The oldest human remains in Tacna date from 9.000 years, which is confirmed by the Toquepala cave paintings. Groups coming from the Collao lived in this area.

First Spanish came in 1537. The Tacna people collaborated to the independence of Peru since the beginning of the freedom movements, which began in 1811 with Francisco Antonio de Zela. On May 26th, 1880, after Alto de la Alianza battle, Tacna was occupied by Chile; it became Peruvian again on August 28th, 1929 after the signature of the Ancon treaty.
